Summer in Newport Like a Local

While our team members' opinions may differ on the best coffee shop, sandwich, or bookstore in town, we collectively agree that summer is magical here in Newport! For the most authentic Newport experience, get outside and take advantage of the sweet summertime. Read on for our staff's tips on how to summer in Newport like one of the locals.

Farm Stands and Foodie Finds

If you're a foodie like us, you'll love Newport's open-air shops and farm stands. Check out locally sourced offerings, like the Aquidneck Growers Market on Memorial Boulevard. Enjoy shopping for in-season fruits and veggies, cheeses and fresh seafood. Whip up a homemade meal in your fully-equipped loft kitchen and take in the views on your private outdoor deck. A Market, located on Bellevue offers a variety of convenient, healthy and vegetarian grab-and-go options. Pack your cooler bag with goodies for a nutritious lunch on the beach!

Charters and Sailing

Amid an ongoing pandemic, we've learned that experiences are even more valuable than material things. For a family bonding activity, a birthday celebration, or perhaps a Father's Day gift, book a fishing or lobster tour through Fish'n Tales Adventures. They also offer fireworks cruises from Newport Harbor for a festive end to a perfect summer day. For a more relaxing experience, let the ocean air rejuvenate your spirit and power your sails on select sailing tours and charters with Newport Harbor.

Public Beaches

Gooseberry Beach and Rejects Beach are hidden 'gems' that we absolutely love for beating the summer crowds. Gooseberry is a beach oasis, located on Ocean Drive. Because it's nestled inside of a cove, it's a relatively quiet beach with minimal waves. Rejects Beach is located on the southern end of the Cliff Walk, and while it doesn't offer parking, it's easily accessible by trolley. Both beaches are ideal for the savvy traveler, as they're lesser-known and don't require a town beach pass.

First Beach and Second Beach are among the most popular on Aquidneck Island. First Beach, also known as Easton's Beach, marks the beginning of the iconic Cliff Walk and is a must-visit for its grand panoramic views. Second Beach (aka Sachuest Beach) is one of the most beautiful—and crowded—of the island's beaches. Still, the gorgeous coastal views make this spot worth visiting for a first-time trip to Newport.

Did you know you can take group or private surfing lessons with Rhody Surf at Second Beach? After a fun-filled day in the hot sun, cool off in true Rhode Island fashion with a refreshing Del's Lemonade! There are Del's locations on First Beach and Second Beach.

Wineries, Breweries and Distilleries

If Del's Lemonade doesn't quench your thirst, there are plenty of unique distilleries for adults to enjoy locally-crafted beverages. Check out some of our favorite Wineries, Breweries and Distilleries. Searching for hand-crafted cocktails in stylish settings? See our list of the Best Cocktails in Newport.
